We all know this saying – and it can be applied to so many things in life. All too often when we are changing something in our lives we try and do it all at once. This is never easy and you can be setting yourself up for failure.
It is important to have the end result as your goal. It is necessary to know where your destination is before you begin the journey, but if you are aiming to run a marathon you don’t set out the first day to run the full 26 miles – not forgetting the extra 385 yards!
To achieve any goal usually involves an element of change. If running the marathon was your goal, it may mean you get up earlier than normal to do some training, it may mean you miss some leisure time with your friends to go on training, it may mean you cut down your alcohol consumption, it may mean you change your diet – but don’t do it all at once. Make one small change and be successful in that and you will find your confidence will grow. This will give you a head start in the next small change you make. It is quite remarkable how one small change can make your confidence expand, not just in the area you have changed, but in a much wider field. So change can be good!
Reward yourself along the way towards that end goal. As you successfully complete each small step towards that final destination, recognise your achievement with some reward. Recognition helps your self confidence, your personal development and your self worth.
None of this will happen without change. They say the definition of insanity is doing the same thing every day and expecting a different result.
So what are you going to change in your life? What is such a burning desire within you that you will put up with the initial discomfort of change?
